octopus:

the clever cephalopod

The octopus is the most intelligent invertebrate (creature without a spine).  Captain Jacques Cousteau once put food in a glass jar with a cork stopper, and set the jar before a hungry octopus. It didn't take long for the octopus to figure out how to uncork the jar and reach its dinner. The name octopus means "eight feet" (or arms).   The octopus, like the squid and nautilus, belongs to the class of animals called cephalopods, which means "head + feet" (or arms).  Both words are good descriptions of this creature with a large head and eight long arms.  Click here for more about the octopus.
