PAGES 14-17 COUSTEAU ADVENTURES
Emphasis on: reading comprehension, motivation for discussion
Students read about a real Cousteau team adventure off the coast of Madagascar.
Vocabulary preview: anchoring, wedged, vivid.
Word to teach: Teach the word "reviving" in context as follows: "I thought I was too hot and tired to finish the race, but this cold water is reviving me."
Discussion Questions:
What does the Cousteau team find that surprises them? (A sea turtle caught in a tree root.)
What has happened to the turtle? (It is very weak because it needs to get to the ocean right away. )
What does the Cousteau team decide to do? (They decide to put the turtle in their launch and take care of it until it is well enough to swim the reefs on its own.)
What does a crew member name the turtle and why? (Serge names the turtle "Ursula" because he says it reminds him of a neighbor.)
What does the crew do with the turtle? (They place it in a large pool of cool water to revive it. When it is strong enough they will bring it back to shore.)
Follow-up Activity: Have students look up the various types of sea turtles listed in the comic on their computers or in an encyclopedia.
Emphasis on: reading comprehension, motivation for discussion, creative writing skills
Page 18 WHAT A GUY: Students read an article about Diver George Guy, who turned an Earth Day celebration into a day to honor Captain Cousteau as well.
Discussion Questions:
What did students do to their school to give it a "watery" feel? (They created a gangplank on their handicapped access ramp, they designed a "coral reef" of brightly colored fish that people could walk through.)
Follow-Up: Brainstorm ideas with students for ways they could honor Captain Cousteau at their school.
