Emphasis on: reading comprehension, drawing conclusions

Students read a true cartoon adventure in which the Cousteau team films giant groupers.

Before reading: If your students have already read the grouper feature story, ask them if they think such a large fish might pose a danger to humans. Then tell them they are about to read a true story about when a Cousteau team filmed a giant grouper on expedition.

Discussion: What do the divers do when the giant grouper keeps returning to their film site? (They name him Ulysses.) What does Ulysses do that surprises the divers? (He lets them pet him.) What does Ulysses do that causes a problem with the filming? (He wants to play and gets himself in every shot.) How do the divers solve the problem? (They lock Ulysses up in the anti-shark cage each day until they are finished filming. Then they let him out again.) How does Ulysses react to this? (He does not hold a grudge—the minute the divers let him out he wants to play again.)

Ask students if they ever had a problem with a pet that needed resolving. What was the problem and what did they do to fix it? (A dog that always barked when the doorbell rang, knocked the trashcan over, etc.)
