Have students look at all the drawings and read all the descriptions of sea creatures imagined by children. Then ask them if they would have chosen the same winner as Steve Hillenburg. Why or why not?

Students read about the Cousteau ship Alcyone, and learn a little bit about her through a photo spread.

Vocabulary preview: pressure, fuel, distinctive.

Word to teach: Teach the word recognizable in context as follows: "My mom has bright red hair, which makes her very recognizable in a crowd."

Discussion Questions:
According to the article, where are some of the places Alcyone has been? (Madagascar, Australia, France, the Americas, the Caspian Sea.)

How old a ship is Alcyone? (Seventeen.)

Why did Captain Cousteau think Alcyone was a good name for his ship? (Because in Greek mythology, Alcyone was the daughter of the god of the wind. Since Alcyone uses wind a great deal of the time for her travels, it seemed like a very fitting name.)
