COUSTEAU ADVENTURES
Emphasis on: reading comprehension, motivation for discussion
Students read about a real Cousteau expedition where the team met up with a giant river otter in the Amazon.
Discussion Questions:
What surprises them about the otter right away? (It is unusually friendly and trusting.) Is this a good or a bad thing? (It is a good thing for the crew who want to rescue it, but bad because it may approach hunters who want to trap it.)How do they make friends with the river otter? (They give it some fish to eat.)
How does the otter respond when Serge gets in the water? (It is extremely friendly and playful.)
What does the crew do with the otter? They bring it to a part of the amazon where there are lots of other otters, and it will be safe from hunters and fisherman.
Follow Up: Have students research river otters on a computer or in an encyclopedia, and list five facts about them.
